The direction is good, and helps a bit in saving the movie.
The climax in the movie, should have been little shocking and captivating, but unfortunately, it was bad and predictable. The romantic tracks (of Rani-Abhishek and Konkona-Kunal), though interesting, doesn’t satisfy, as the movie goes off-track during these sequences. It seemed unacceptable and it seemed that the director and writer have taken cinematic liberties. But the main scene of the movie-Rani becoming a prostitute was quite unrealistic. Badki not able to find a suitable job in Mumbai, doing odd-jobs are very well shot. Even the sequences thereafter are nicely depicted and keep alive the viewer’s interest. The introduction of Banaras in the beginning followed by the song ‘Hum To Aise Hai Bhaiyya’ keeps you glued on the screen. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag starts beautifully. She had got a job in Mumbai! So will Badki be able to hide the truth from Chutki? What will happen if Chutki finds out the truth? But then one day, Chutki lands up in her flat in Mumbai. Slowly, the situation in her family starts improving. In this way, she starts earning money and sends it to her family.
It is then that she decides to become a high class escort. But Badki, who was not even 10 th pass and was not able to speak English, couldn’t find any job. But things take a worse turn, because of which Badki decides to go to Mumbai so that she can earn some money and help her family. However, their family was always in short of money, because of which Badki left her schooling and started helping her mother Sabitri (Jaya Bachchan) in tailoring. The story of the movie: Badki (Rani Mukherji) and her younger sister Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma) are having a fun-filled life in the small city of Banaras. But unfortunately, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is quite below expectations and looses because of story with many loopholes and glitches. I was waiting for Laaga Chunari Mein Daag simply because it was directed by Pradeep Sarkar, the same person who created magic with Parineeta. This year, out of the 5 films of YRF, my 2 most awaiting flicks were Chak De! India and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.
