VLC media player adds support for 360-degree videos, images using giroptic technology VLC, the world’s most versatile open source media player, has added support for 360-degree videos via their preview program. VideoLAN — the makers of VLC — released the technical preview labelled as VLC 360 for the upcoming version 3.0 of VLC on Saturday. To develop the functionality, VLC’s development team worked with 360-degree camera maker Giroptic.
The full version of the feature, which allows Windows and Mac users to view 360-degree photos and videos, as well as panoramic photos, is expected to arrive as part of the VLC 3.0 update at the end of the month. It also supports the spherical display mode, which is another step toward full VR capability. As always, the software is open source and the new features can be controlled using the mouse and keyboard. Currently, the VLC 360 is available only for Windows (7 upward) and Mac OS X (10.10 upward). The organization plans to release VLC 360 functionality for all platforms including Android, iOS and Xbox One, as soon as it is rolled out. “Mobile versions will use the phone sensors to navigate inside the videos,” notes on the technical preview website said. But if you can’t wait to try out the panoramic playbacks, you can get the Windows build here and the mac OS build here.
Be warned, though, that technical previews are often buggy. The folks at VideoLAN added: “VLC will probably support VR headsets like Vive, Daydream, Oculus or OSVR, in 2017. VLC will also get 3D audio playback, including head tracking headphones. We’ll keep you posted.” VLC thanked Giroptic, saying: “This project wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Giroptic, who has provided samples, cameras, code and expertise on those features.” “We are very proud to contribute our expertise in 360° to this open source player.
The VLC Media Player for Mac is a great tool for Mac PC in playing all kinds of media formats. Just download and watch videos in any format without worrying about the compatibility as VLC supports even peculiar media formats.
This will allow the millions of VLC users to take full advantage of a promising new technology and be widely involved in its democratization,” Richard Ollier, co-founder and CEO of Giroptic, said.

Euronymouse, Scummy business practices I had this app, and bought the premium features, and it was a decent, perfectly serviceable app. Then the developer added incredibly intrusive advertising in an update, with an additional in-app purchase required to disable them. Seriously, just imagine: it's a remote control, and periodically you will completely lose its functionality because it gets hijacked by a full-screen ad that has sound on by default.
Is there ever a situation in which you'd be using a remote control app and suddenly having a loud, stupid ad play.wouldn't. be hella annoying? And does anyone really think it's okay to completely break an app for paying customers with this sort of nonsense? Yeah, I guess I could pay the additional $2 to get rid of ads, but you know what? I'd rather give that money to a developer who hadn't already proven themself to be a swindler. Hobbyist Software has one that looks good.
Developer Response, Hello, Apologies for the inconvenience, please send us an email we'll share you a promo-code to remove ads. In a campaign we gave away premium features for free to thousands of users, to monetise those users we added ads, before that very few people had bought the app, so we offered promo-code for them to remove ads. I think you might have missed the message in what's new section of the app about promo-code. Anyway, apologies for once again, I hope you'll continue to use the app. Regards, Adarsh Urs. I have moved to a iPhone and I try to restore, but restore does nothing. Developer Response, Hello, It's not possible to restore purchases from different OS platforms, to sync the purchases with different OS platforms we need to ask user to create an account with our app, we think, it is beyond the scope of this app, so we haven't implemented it. We hope you understand. Regards, Adarsh Urs. Kajunwolf, Like the versatility I love the versatility, however I purchased this some time back when I had my windows phone.
